Saturday of the First Week in Ordinary Time
“I did not come to call the righteous but sinners,” Jesus assures those who question Him about His table fellowship with those considered the scum of society. Jesus’ deeds and words were a scandal to the religious leaders. Yet Jesus saw the bigger picture. The Spiritual Exercises initiate a person into a vision of God’s gratuitous mercy and Jesus’ continuous invitation to sinners: “Follow me.”
As sinners saved by Christ, let us go out to our fellow sinners and tell them of God’s salvation through our words and deeds. Chesterton said that a person who approaches a brothel is in fact searching for God. There are so many metaphorical brothels in which God’s people are embroiled these days. How can you be an agent of God’s salvation in your daily life? Is there someone who appears lost that you can embrace and lead toward God?
